The Dream is Here:
I Have Become Comfortably Numb – Danny’s story
“The only time I ever went to the dentist is when I absolutely had to, ABSOLUTELY had to. If I had problems with my teeth I’d let it go...I always had [to have] root canals because I never went in. They have to be swollen up, and I mean put me on my death bed before I go to the dentist.” Danny’s story is like millions of Americans who avoid the dentist. He’d rather suffer than get the care he needs, risking infection and illness.

Danny is one of a small percentage of people for whom local anesthetics fail. He was never able to get numb. “I don’t know if you can imagine going through a root canal without being numb, but it was bad…it just sucked.” The medication was delivered but it didn’t work so Danny suffered in fear and silence until he found a solution – sedation dentistry.

With yet another broken tooth, he heard an ad on the radio for sedation dentistry. His wife encouraged him to find out more. To Danny, it sounded perfect. He learned that relaxation can help body chemistry to allow local anesthetic to work more effectively. He additionally took comfort in knowing that he could be completely relaxed and not remember the smells and sounds of the visit. As Danny says “This sedation was, it was heaven-sent for me.”

Sedation allowed Danny to complete all of his needed treatment in a single visit. Danny acknowledges that without sedation, he’d likely have let all of his teeth fall out and his overall health suffer. “It totally changed everything for me. I would have never put that kind of money into my mouth and gone through that [pain].”

Now Danny is happy that his mouth is strong and healthy, but even more so, he excited that he can now eat the foods he had to avoid before due to the pain and broken teeth.

“It was kind of neat, once we had a plan and I knew that I could go in and get this done and just have my teeth healthy…it was an awesome, awesome thing for me. Cause I don’t think I’d have had my mouth done that way anyway else. For me, it was pretty cut and dry. If you can make me to where I don’t feel it and I don’t remember anything, and I just wake up and my teeth are great, that’s awesome! There’s nothing to be scared about. It’s just like it never happened. The next day you’re…everything’s good. To me it’s a total win/win…you don’t need to run anymore.”

For thousands of people just like Danny, sedation dentistry has been the answer to years of unnecessary pain and suffering. His dental fear and difficulty getting numb with anesthetic made a visit to the dentist seem like a nightmare. Now Danny can have the care he needs and wants in a comfortable, safe environment.
