You Are Not Alone – Rex Anderson’s Story
“I hate the dentist. Ah! I (used to) hate the dentist” says Rex Anderson. What changed his mind? “Sedation dentistry. Best thing since sliced bread!”

Ever since he was a child Rex hated going to the dentist. His teeth were extremely sensitive and he didn’t like a dentist being in or near his mouth. He especially hated the sound of a dental drill. It was all very traumatic for him. As an adult he had to force himself to go in for dental care and only when it was absolutely necessary. Then one day while driving in his car he heard a radio ad for sedation dentistry. He made the choice right then that would change everything—he decided to call the sedation dentist from the ad. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” Rex said.

“I don’t know if it was courage that made me make the phone call. It was the lack of courage without sedation that made me call. It was the fact that finally going to the dentist might not be so much trauma.” It had been several years since Rex had been to the dentist.

Rex described the staff at his dentist’s office as “truly awesome.” They were warm, welcoming, compassionate, and understanding. After being seated, they got him headphones with music he could control to help him relax.

Rex described his first sedation experience as “a couple pills, no big deal…I wasn’t tense and nervous like I normally was.” With a pillow under his legs, and an additional dose of medication, Rex was fully relaxed. The next thing he remembered was being at home with all of his dental work done!

“One of my visits took about five or six hours,” Rex said. “There was a lot of work that needed to be done. The great thing is that the time just went by *snap* like that. I was visiting with my wife and she was like, ‘Boy, you were there for a long time.’ And I’m like, ‘Really? I didn’t realize that.’ And I really wasn’t sore the next day. Usually after sitting in the dentist’s office for five or six hours your jaw would be sore, but there were no problems.”

Rex’s message to other fearful patients: “Sedation dentistry…I tell everybody about it. Especially if they say, ‘Eh, I got to go to the dentist.’ And it’s like…have sedation dentistry. It’s no big deal, you take a pill, and you’re done! It’s awesome!
